RISK FACTORS

All those that influence cardiovascular disease:

Hypertension,
Diabetes,
Smoking,
Obesity and
High cholesterol.

In addition, some strokes as embolic stroke, are caused by valvular heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias, hence, the importance of controlling.

PREVENTION

Control the risk factors mentioned.

From a preventive point of view the above AIT are very important, as they often precede more serious injuries, and indicate the need to establish a preventive medical treatment, usually based on low-dose aspirin. (more…)

WHAT IS IT?

The brain depends more than any other body, of an adequate oxygen supply through the movement.
To do this, you have lots of blood vessels and multiple mechanisms to maintain constant the amount of blood flowing through it to ensure good oxygenation of the brain even in abnormal situations.

When the blood vessel of the brain is injured by one or another does not reach the blood properly, what are called strokes?

These are the leading cause of hospital admission for neurosurgical problems.

CAUSES

They are classified into two types, depending on the cause of vascular disease:

Ischemia or Infarction: When the problem is the occlusion or blockage of a vessel, so that blood can not reach a certain area of the brain. This obstruction may be due to: (more…)

Epidural abscess

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Accumulation of pus caused by a bacterial infection of the outer coverings of the brain and spinal cord.

CAUSES

Often do not get to find out the primary cause of bacterial infection causing epidural abscess. Pathogens usually reach the brain by one of three ways:

By contiguity; infection that spreads from neighboring structures such as osteomyelitis or paravertebral abscess.

For direct inoculation, infection caused by a wound in the head or spine.

Via the blood, infection that spreads through the blood supply from other infected organs like lungs, skin or heart valves.

SYMPTOMS

These symptoms usually occur over several hours. They resemble those of a brain tumor or a stroke:

Headache.
Nausea and vomiting.
Weakness, numbness or paralysis on one side of the body.
Back and radicular pain (sciatica type) when the infection is located in the spinal cord.
Step irregular.
Seizures.
Fever.
Confusion or delirium.
Difficulty speaking. (more…)
