Amniotic Fluid Analysis

Material to study: amniotic fluid.
Time spent by patient: 45 to 60 minutes.

Purpose: Discovering fetal abnormalities, particularly the characteristics and chromosome abnormalities and disorders in the fetal nervous system development.

Discover hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Determine the maturity of the fetus, especially of the lungs. To identify the sex of the fetus, if one or both parents are carriers of sex-linked disorder such as hemophilia.

Diagnosing metabolic disorders such as MPS. Assessing fetal health by discovering the presence of fecal matter or blood or by measuring hormone levels or thyroid fetal estriol.

The procedure is often recommended for women over 35 years of age and women who have had abortions or when a family history of genetic defects. Can also be used to handle a pregnancy with certain problems.
